Is it called a fungus or a mushroom, I'm not sure to be honest. I'm no mushroom expert. But apparently some Wood Ears are edible. However, there are a few lookalikes, so do be sure to double check before attempting to eat any to avoid any problems. Personally I wouldn't consume them. I know they are used in Chinese medicine, and are said to taste rather bland. Anyway, they are quite strange in appearance, and I never knew what they were until a few months ago after a bit of research. Camera: Lumix FZ50.
